MTH 10-1113-1 400E Standard Gauge Loco
Posted by lionel2 on Saturday, July 7, 2012 5:27 AM

Hello all,  I have some questions about my MTH loco from 1999.  I just aquired this loco and tender and I am not sure what transformer to use with this loco.  I heard that a KW transformer will work with this loco, is this true?  Are there any other big transformers I can use with this loco?  Price range I am willing to spend for a transformer is about $150 or less.  I know I can get a KW at the show or online for around $80 to $100.  I believe I need a transformer with whistle, bell and direction controls.  Does the transformer have to get digital or will standard transformers work just fine?  And does anyone know the correct battery part number for this loco??  Where can I buy extra wicks for the smoke unit??  Thanks and have a nice day!!

I've got a situation similar to yours.  I've got a Lionel KW transformer myself that I've had for 40-plus years.  Yes, it will work with any modern day AC locomotive.  It MAY activate the whistle feature, then again it may not.  It WON'T activate the bell feature as there's no "bell button" on it.  I use the KW to run the two loops I have under the Christmas tree and as I turn the sound and smoke units off for Christmas running the inability to use all the sound functions doesn't matter. To use all the features on the locomotive you'll have to bite the bullet and go with a modern transformer.

As far as replacement batteries any hobby shop in your area that stocks MTH should have them or be able to get them for you.  Same with the smoke unit wicks, but unless the wick is dried out and "fried" I wouldn't worry about replacing it. Possibly you can order MTH parts through their website but I've never tried, never had the need.

Probably your best choice is the CW as it has bell, whistle and direction buttons to access those functions.

What modern transformer is best just to run one Standard Gauge 400e such as the one I have??  I would like a transformer that has bell, whistle and direction controls and buttons.  Bascially, one that I can use to operate all the features of the 10-1113-1 400e loco.  About how much does a transformer cost that does all this?  I have an MTH dealer close to me, I am sure he can do all the needed repairs, such as replacing the battery, wick and setting me up with a new transformer and some smoke fluid from MTH.  Thanks.

The Lionel CW-80 transformer that Kwickster suggested will do all you want it to do, and let me also suggest the MTH Z-1000 transformer.  Both are excellent quality,  the list price on the CW-80 is $145, list on the Z-1000 is $110, according to the last MTH catalog.

lionel2,

I'd recommend MTH's Z1000.  It has whistle and bell buttons, plus it is safer for electronics than postwar tranformers.  Give Brady's in Greensburg a call.  John has much better prices, service, and selection than our local dealer in Bridgeville.
