PVC insulated cloth covered wire is still made if you want to keep it original looking.

If you're not necessarily into keeping it all cloth covered wire original looking, a good UL1061 20ga stranded wire should suffice for all your STD ga engine repair needs.

Lionel Standard Gauge Motor Repair
Posted by bmdoc28 on Tuesday, June 19, 2012 6:32 AM

I was wondering if i can get some help - I am new to this - I have an old LIonel 8e super motor that needs some wiring updates. I wanted to repair myself - just curious as to what type/gauge wire i need to use for a Standard Gauge train?  I have some post war wire leftover from my fathers collection - but it seems too flimsy or small compared to what the train has.

Any help will be appreciated!
