Prewar AF Torpedo Engine questions
Posted by Gray Cat on Monday, June 18, 2012 3:13 PM

I have a later production American Flyer O Gauge PRR Torpedo (the one with jewel markers) that someone restored. They did a great job on the paint and decals, but they converted it to an Atlas running gear with smoke. This is a great little set up if you want to run the engine only on newer scale track. As soon as you put it on tubular track and any Prewar O gauge cars the weight of the metal cars pulls the engine off the track at corners and it will not navigate through AF O gauge switches due to the short distance between pickup rollers. SO my idea is to take the guts out and put it back to Flyer running gears. My questions are is there anyone out there who might know WHICH engines besides the same Torpedo would have the same running gear as the original PRR Torpedo. Finding a parts PRR Torpedo with good running gear might be a little harder than some of the other types..

Thanks!

It might be easier to put pickups on the tender and use a wire tether to bring power to the locomotive when it's pickups get isolated on a switch.  I've done this on several O-gauge steamers, it's not an uncommon issue.

As far as pulling the locomotive off the tracks, I'd add weight.
