MTH AC/DC

I was wondering if MTH o gauge engines can run on AC or DC power. Thanks!

MTH "G Gauge" (One Gauge) locomotives are designed to operate on AC or DC.   When AC is used it's rectified, in the engine, to DC.  When run on DC, the voltage "passes through".

I use DC for my "G Gauge" only because other brand locomotives are DC only.   MTH uses the same PS2 boards for both "O" and "G".

As for "O", the MTH Catalog, 2012 Volume 2, is about the newer PS3 System that is now standard. It does not use a battery.

Okay I missed where you said O gauge

Sorry or would of just said AC as I believe thats the answer even after reading the previous post. ( I sometimes read more into a response than ment to be there.)

Most (maybe all) MTH DCS locomotives will run on AC or DC.  The DCS control system accepts AC or DC to provide track power.  I'm not sure about the older PS/1 locomotives, they may not run on DC.

Well, most of us run AC anyway.

With MTH for O gauge, my best guess is that they need to run on A.C. because of the electronics in them. The motors run on rectified D.C. from the circuit boards, but not sure if you can run D.C. thru their circuit board or not. Also after reading one of the above posts, I did not know that the new PS-3 will run on most systems. So the older engines may be voltage sensitive.

Actually, your best guess would be wrong.  All of the PS3 locomotives run on AC or DC, and I'm virtually certain that the PS2 ones do as well, but I don't have any DC leanings, so I'm not going to test it.  It's somewhat telling that the MTH DCS TIU specifically specifies either AC or DC for it's power handling.
