using paper and expandable foam for scenery
Posted by nomthever on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 2:42 PM

has anyone out there ever used paper and expandable foam for building scenery? i found an article in model railroad magazine about using paper and glue to build mountains and hills and then i went further and experimented with using expandable foam from spray cans to cover the paper and it really worked out great it makes a very strong but very light weight scenery and the foam takes acrylic paints very readily which makes for easy coloring and applying grass and trees and other details, try it and see if you like it, i think you will.

I have used Great Stuf and plaster gauze before. It works best for adding hills to a flat deck.

I've used Great Stuff (expandable foam) and found it's better for making smaller smooth rock formations. I've also used dark grey packing foam and shrunk it with a heat gun ... very realalistic and paintable. I also created an elevated field/meadow around a microwave tower (see photo below) using bunched up newspaper covered with landscaping fabric used to prevent weeds as a cover. I think it came out pretty realistic. Tell me what you think.
