A great idea that can be applied here. Disney has a ride called "Soari'n" that uses certain scents to go along with the image on the screen. These would be misted into the audience. You could easily rig a similar method using certain scented oils. Bath and Body Works sells a plug in that has cartridges that have a wick and the device mists the scent into the air. You could have a IR detector that allows power to flow to the plug in mister. This would make the fan turn on and send a scent toward the person standing next to the layout. I could imagine this working with say an orange grove. Have orange scented oil in the mister, which would be hidden behind either a screen covered by foliage, or just behind the trees. You could also use a motion detector like what they use on the security lights.
Good luck,Dennis

Boyd I remember seeing ads in either MRR or CTT years back for various scents you could place on your layout. What company was it? Are they still in business?

I'm not 100% positive, but I think that may have been one of MR's infamous April Fools articles.
But if you are really into the idea, I don't think that it would be too difficult to get your hands on some used motor oil and creosote to sprinkle on the layout.

I have figured out what is wrong with my brain! On the left side nothing works right, and on the right side there is nothing left!
I picked up some pine sticks at Hobby Lobby, they are the size of a very small straw. I put them among my pine trees, they last a long time.

What scents are you looking for?
Other than the scent of smoke fluid that I recall from my childhood, I cannot imagine scenting my layout.

I remember the company´s name was "Olfactory Airs", which offered various scents, but they did not last very long.
There are still scented smoke fluids around - you can check here:

Personally, I don´t like those scents. I find them irritating to my lungs after a little while.
