Did a bit of experimenting with my newly reactivated 3376 Giraffe Car (new internals courtesy of the Train Tender) and a couple of pieces of FasTrack given to me by a buddy after they'd experimented with cutting down the ballast a bit...
As you can see, all that's really needed is to use a Dremel to cut a slot for the center tab just under the ties...
And here's Mr. Giraffe ducking his head under the telltale! Easy-peasy! I don't think any notching is really necessary for the telltale base, as there's plenty of clearance there...
