These sets are from the early 70's.

Set number 6-1184 was made in 1971, and set number 6-1284 was made in 1972.

It sounds like you have set 6-1284, they difference in the 2 sets is that most of the sets from 1971 have the Mighty Sound of Steam , AND Whistle, while the sets from 1972 have just the Mighty Sound of Steam.

When the Mighty Sound of Steam came out in 1971, MPC tried to incorporate an electronic whistle with it, but the control unit that was developed prooved faulty.

The engines that come with these sets run very well, and have a (2) position eunit.

As for value, I would guesstimate in the mid to high 100's for a new, or like-new set.

Many of these better MPC era sets are great for operating, and/or collecting, I would not bank on their value increasing much.

              I believe that the Allegheny set was produced in 1972.  Not sure on it's value though.

There should be a 6-xxxxxx number somewhere on the set box. Also, the engine and the various rolling stock should be inside boxes inside the set box - those too should have 6-xxxxxx numbers printed on them.

Those numbers would be the best way to help you out. The set number should be on the set box-end flaps.

I have recently acquired a Lionel Allegheny train set in it's box.  Here is the information which is printed on the box, which also has a drawing (not a photograph) depicting the shoulders and heads of a boy and a man, an actual size drawing of the train engine (027 Gauge), and a scenic drawing of the train going over a bridge with mountains in the background.  The information listed on the box is as follows:  The Mighty Sound of Steam. for total realism...the actual chugging sound of steam synchronized to the pace of the engine and the puffing of smoke.  SET INCLUDES:  Die-Cast C&O Engine with headlight, smoke, and Might Sound of Steam, C&O Tender, Santa Fe Flat Car with stakes, Bulkhead and Load TA&G Hopper Car, Wheaties Box Car, Burlington Northern Gondola with Cannisters, C&O Caboose, Eight Curved Tracks, Five Straight Tracks, Remote Control uncoupling Track, Trainmaster Transformer, Two crew figures, Lockon, Wire and Owners Manual, FOAM MODEL BUILDINGS. 

There is a red sticker which reads, "Heavy Duty Die-Cast Engine".  27" x 54" track space.  As far as I can tell, all these pieces are in the box.

Could you tell me the approx age of the set as well as an approx value?
