Do you know how long the coil on the gateman be energized before harm is done to the coil ?  Or for a 151 semaphore for that matter ?   .......

I'm assuming that we're dealing with a postwar 145 gateman or something equivalent to it.

The simple way to hook it up will also turn on one of the controller lights all the time:  There are three terminals.  One is connected to the frame of the building.  Connect that also to one of the outer terminals of the turnout.  Connect the 145 terminal farthest from the first one to the voltage source that you're using for the turnout, whether the center rail or the fixed-voltage plug.  Connect the third 145 terminal to common, that is, the layout's outside rails generally.  If the gateman comes out at the wrong time, just move the first 145 terminal to the other outside terminal of the 022.

If you're willing to make or buy your own control rail, separate from the turnout, you won't have to give up normal operation of the 022C controller.

You can wire a 153 block signal to an O-22 switch.  The common wire ( center post ) on the signal goes to the center post on the O-22 Switch.  The other 2 wires for the green-red signal lamps go to the outside posts on the O-22 Switch. The signal will show green or red depending on the way the switch is set.  The Gateman could be wired the same way, using only one of the outside posts on the O-22 switch.  Lionel shows how to do this in the instructions that comes with the new O-22 Switches.

However - if the switch is aligned for that position that energizes the gateman, the coil on the gateman will be energized as long as the switch is in that position.  I'm not sure, but I assume that the coil should not be energized for a great length of time with out doing possible harm to the coil.

I'm sure someone will have a correct answer to that question but I personally have never done that and not sure it can be done. I have always either used a 153C relay or made a isolation track to do it.

Reason saying not sure it can be I would think the quick jolt of electric to the switch would get the man out about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way and he would be going back in as I believe the power doesn't stay to the switch other than long enough to throw the switch.
