okay just went and reread the instructions and as clear as day it states "this product intended to add full bodied railsounds to conventionally operated ( non-command control) train layouts with or without older sound systems". so to use your cab one to control this you must be using a TPC or a powermaster as john said they just didn't explain it correctly but it does say in conventional mode and the only way to use a cab 1 in conventional mode is with a powermaster or a TPC

if your running it behind a command engine in command mode maybe. But if your not then yes you will need something like tpc or power master to operate it but again I would think you would have to be able to program it some how so its like engine # 03 or something other wise the car isn't going to pick up the signal as a horn button on the cab 1 will operate the engine your currently running and thats all. as its reading engine number 21 or what have you other wise the car can't know your talking to it with the cab1 so I agree with john on this one. But if you get one and it does work with your cab one let us know as it will be interesting figuring out how it can be doing that.

I received an email from Lionel Customer Service and they repeated what the manual stated. Use the keys on your CAB-1 to hear the sounds. I just may purchase this boxcar.

Good luck with that, I'll be amazed if it responds to TMCC commands, since I've had two of the same design and they were strictly for conventional operation.  The only way I can see a CAB1 affecting them is if you have a PowerMaster or a TPC connected and you're using them to run conventional trains.

OK, first off, I'd suggest you forget they put CAB1 in the instructions, because it doesn't apply! Laugh  The only way this will work with a CAB1 is if you also had a PowerMaster controlling the track voltage!  This is an accessory for conventional operation. Here's what I'm looking at.

Lionel 6-19887 RailSounds Boxcar Operating Manual

I've had a couple of these RailSounds boxcars in the past, they're strictly for conventional operation, and they don't see the TMCC signal from the TMCC command base at all.

The stuff describing conventional operation of the car seems correct in that manual.

I was having a problem posting my question. I will try again! The online instructions read you can activate the sounds with your CAB-1 by pressing the corresponding buttons on your handheld. Is that all I need to do? I can do all this with my CAB-1 and command base? If you go online and search on the item#, you will see no further explanation. Let me know what you think. Thanks!
