MTH Premier vs Railking stock cars
Posted by First Timer on Saturday, March 24, 2012 5:36 PM

Hi guys,

It's me again.  Just wanted to ask about the size difference on the Premier stock cars (ex. hoppers) vs. Railking.  Are Railking stock cars also scale or do they also have scale sizes?

Thanks

In most cases Railking rolling stock is not to scale.

Thanks Bill.  Is there a better way of telling Railking rolling stocks are scale?  On their Railking Diesels they specify if it is scale.

Thanks

Glen

I seem to remember back a couple of years ago but believe they where talking engines but they made a comment I think here in CTT mag that the rail king now is scale just not as much detail and I think they used 2 GP's NYC to show the differences. Now if thats true for rolling stock not sure. I do have some of there Passenger cars that are rail-king and I have some MTH coming in that I won but I think the rail king cars are scale not just as much added detail instead its molded in and believe it was put that way about the engines.

There is no pat answer to this question.  Some RK stuff is scale, other pieces are not scale.  In this case, I'm talking 1:48 scale as "scale".

The following photo shows a MTH Railking boxcar vs a MTH Premier scale boxcar. Even though the Railking boxcar is not scale in dimensions it is still larger than Lionel traditional size boxcars.

In my collection, I have Premier 50 and 60' boxcars that clearly aren't scale 50 or 60'.  If you want scale fidelity, stick with ATLAS.  However, I've found that a scale ATLAS car looks like its on steroids on my layout, so I tend to steer clear of the brand.  Plan your layout, than experiment on what "fits" your RR.
