Thinking of a total sound transplant
Posted by MadRiver on Monday, March 19, 2012 2:22 PM

Howdy all:

I'm continuing to work on converting my Lionel New York Central Flyer 0-8-0 into a Central Vermont Railway 0-8-0.  One of the things I don't particularly love about the train is the sound.  I've been thinking of a total transplant, and have read a few articles on ERR and Dallee.  Anyone have experience replacing Lionel Trainsounds with products from either of these companies?  Ideally, I'd like to keep everything in the tender if possible.

Thanks!

I'm not that familiar with steam as I mainly do diesel but with that said let me ask a couple of questions does the box say trainsounds or railsounds there is a big difference in quality between them with railsounds being Superior.

now for the second part electric railroad is now ( if I have this right) owned by Lionel. That is what Lionel uses in there engines. The only thing is I know electric railroad doesn't and don't think you can get it from Lionel is crew talk and tower coms.

The dallee company I know nothing about. also there up to like railsound 4 now I believe so that could make a big difference. I had a steam engine that had railsounds init and I loved it kinda wish I didn't sell it but the main reason for selling it was didn't want to repaint/label it and figure how to get the original road name off of it as it was from the wrong coast for me.

The ERR RailSounds Commander is RailSounds 4 and indeed includes the crew talk and tower com.  Note that it's like older Lionel TMCC locomotives in that there is only one message each way, unintelligible talk from the cab and a simple "you have the green" or the like from the tower.  IMO, for retrofits, this is the best you're going to do.

cool I know a year or so ago when I asked they said not yet. and wouldn't indicate if it was coming or not.

Thats an added bonus for me as I have a railsounds4 coming in as I'm converting a dash8 to tmcc with railsounds4 for a dash 9 so that will be good. ( went to there site and read where it had it but didn't say much about it other than how to opperate it but as you said it will probably just say request permission to leave and tower will say you have a green light to go. But at least its something.

For RailSounds 4, there is only one message each way.  For the tower, it's normally a variation on "you have the green", or "cleared to the mainline", etc.  For the train cab, it's unintelligible talk, so I guess it can mean anything. Laugh

I've put in at least a dozen of these conversion kits from various sources.  Mostly from ERR, but the now defunct Digital Dynamics had them, and I've also tinkered with a few TAS setups.
