Welcome to the forum!

It sounds like the insulating pins on your switches may be either missing, or in the wrong location. That would cause the coils to be energized constantly, and cause them to burn out. Look here for the instruction manual showing the proper location of the pins. Scroll down to page 4.

If your engines do not reverse with your transformer, it could be that the e-unit may be locked in one direction. Find the switch or lever, and move it to the opposite position and try reversing the engines again. If that still does not work, the reverse unit in the engine may be bad, or need servicing. What engines do you have? You may have either an electronic or mechanical unit, and service/repair is different for both types.

Another possible thing that happened, is that inside the switch a wire came apart and is touching the frame. I had a problem like this with a similar style switch by Lionel, one day it just shorted out on me, I took the switch apart and a yellow wire was broken in two. Because of that and a few other issues with Lionel switches(6-23010 series) I have moved over to Gargraves switches and track.

I can't understand your last post.  If your turnouts are not working properly even with the insulating pins in the proper locations, you may very well have melted the plastic forms that the coils are wound on, preventing the iron slug from moving freely through the hole inside them.  If the damage is not too bad, you can fix it by running a drill through the hole.

If all wires are the same color, then look for a broken wire somewhere or a disconnected wire.

 Gothic,

There is a #8902 steam locomotive that is DC only, and will not work with an AC transformer, shown here. Did you have another transformer that you used with that locomotive? If so, it was a DC transformer. You can get this loco to work on AC power with the installation of either a bridge rectifier for one way running, or an electronic reverse board to allow you to reverse direction. The diagram has the part number for the front truck.

The instruction manual for the 1645 shown here, shows the 2 switches and their functions; one for the smoke unit, and the rear one for the reverse unit. Push the rear switch forward to unlock the reverse unit and allow sequencing the loco. Chance are, your other loco may be locked in forward also.

You got one switch to work now, but the other does not work properly. It sounds like you are saying if you manually switch the track to one position, it will move the rails, but not with the controller, and after you manually move the switch, the controller will then work switching it back to the original position. The controller only works in one position. Is that correct?

Gothic,

The 8902 engine WILL NOT run on the new transformer because it is a DC locomotive. That is why it only works on the old transformer. To get it to work on the new transformer, you need to add an electronic reverse unit, part # 0103-100, a bracket, #8616-055, and switch, #3664-303  You may have to secure the switch with tape if the boiler shell does not have holes drilled and tapped for screws.

The front and rear trucks for the 8902 are available here. Part # 8040-015 and 8040-020.

Here is a photo of the parts for the 8633. The front truck assembly is part #8403-020. You can order it from the same company that has the other parts, as seen here.

It seems from your video that the one switch works with the anti-derailing feature when the train passes over it, but not with the controller. Try substituting another controller and see if it works. If it still does not work, then possibly one of the terminal lugs is not making contact inside the switch. Chances are the controller or wiring is at fault.
