I've got a really nice Lionel 2020 Turbine- it runs super quiet and smooth,but at times it will stop and reverse by itself. The e-unit cycles properly but is REALLY quiet, almost no buzzing. Any thoughts? I've never seen anything like it.

Quiet is fine.
Electrical problems are mechanical in nature... so check your complete circuit to the loco, especially to the E-Unit solenoid. Inspect everything from dirty track, through the rollers & chassis ground, checking for loose connections and cold solder joints, or failed parts.

Sounds like dirty track or possibly a loose connection to the E-Unit coil.
