Conventional Classic Series
Posted by gnken1 on Thursday, March 8, 2012 9:18 PM

I have purchased Conventional Classics starting with the Virginian F.B. Trainmaster, F3  AA Santa Fe, Milw Rd. GP7, and Virginian Rectifier. I have  had problems starting with the F3's having problems of the Reverse Boards not working. The GP 7 began doing that when I got it and the worst was the E33 Rectifier. I sent theRectifier and Gp7 Milw Road back to Lionel a nd they advised me that the New Updated Boards seem to have problems operating thru a "Command TPC". Anyone else have similar problems with theirs?

I've got the Conventional Classics Santa Fe freight set.  I have not had any problems running it using a Legacy system and a TPC.  My power supply is a 180 watt brick.

When I first got the TPC, I was trying to power it with a CW80.  That combination was not happy.  Lots of weird things happened with this setup.  What kind of control system are you using?

I'm assuming that you have gone through the basics of checking connections and cleaning the track.

Good luck.

What is Lionel's solution to fix the problem ?

My F3's are doing fine. I have MRC "Dual" Transformer and DCS/TMCC and the F3's as well as my Hudson Freight Set, and Virginian F.M. Trainmaster does fine. Yes to your question yes all lines and everything in that regard are hooked up properly. Lionel Advised me that they are getting a few units returned and their only solution is "Refund". I think they should have used the Same Boards that were the Post War Series with TMCC. I have a Great Northern Freight Set and it works fine but due to command system it Operates in Command mode. As well it operates in conventional as well.

Lionel's Answer "Nothing - just refund for the item". I asked if they would correct the problem and send out updated boards that we can put in and they didnt seem interested. Also I have spoken with some others and the big problem is taking older technology of the "Series Wound AC Motors" running them with an electronic Drive Board. They should have either equipped with DC Motors or used original E-Units. Example I use is say GM wants to make a 1000 57 Bel Air Chevy's with original tooling but for the engines there will be Cataletic converters, Fuel Injection instead of Carburator, and Electronic Ignition instead of Cap, points and coil. You can imagine what the results might be. But I think the E units would have been less problems.

I have the  CC ATSF F3's  and NYC F3' that I run using TPC and a cab-1. That combination seems to work ok. I also have a CC VGN trainmaster taht had problems out of the box but I got it fixed.
