I have a DT&I NW2 8111 switcher from about 1971 best I can tell. It does not want to start out in forward without a lot of grinding, shaking, buzzing, and wobbling. In reverse it takes right off and seems fine. What I have found in cleaning and lubricating it is the worm axle pulls the pinion gear into the truck frame and drive gears in reverse. That is when it works fine, but in forward it pushes the worm axle out, away from the truck frame tilting the drive gears and binding things up. Is there a way to shim the worm axle so it dose not have so much horizontal movement? It seems to move almost 1/8". I have been using it in reverse only but now it does not want to back into the yard. I installed a two-position e-unit into when I got it. I have also installed a soundboard so I would like to fix it. I can not find a replacement 8010-100 complete truck motor unit. So guess I need to try a repair. Thanks, Kev

Kev,
First make sure there is no excessive vertical play in the armature. If necessary, tighten the thrust bearing screw in the brushplate until it just makes contact with the armature, and back off a hair. If that is not the problem, then the worm wheel is probably worn.Check the pinion and drive gears holes, and the studs they mount on for wear also. Pull out the armature and turn the wheels by hand in both directions and notice the behavior of all the gears. It looks like there is a bearing in the frame for the worm axle; check that also.
You probably could use pieces of plastic shim stock with slots cut into them to fit over the worm axle, or possibly try 'C' clips as spacers.

Larry,
Read my post closer it is not the vertical play, I set that, it is the play in the worm axle shaft. Back and forth, That is what I need to control. I have had the armature out twice working on this issue.Pinion and drive gear holes are now in question but I think that is because of the movement back and forth on the worm axle.
I will try what you suggest.
Tks,
Kev.
I understood your post clearly. Vertical play in the armature can cause other problems in the gear train, and I just wanted to make sure that the armature was properly set, and not contributing to your problem.
Would recommend replacing entire set of gears, worm wheel, and worm axle.
Okay,
Thanks Larry
I think I'd try to determine what is really wrong before I started with wholesale parts replacements.
