First Flyer layout...
Posted by Mr. S. on Sunday, March 4, 2012 8:16 PM

Hi, a silly question, I'm putting together my first Flyer layout...a small one,  4 X 8.  I've done lots of smaller Lionel layouts.

What is the minimum curved track radius for Flyer S gauge?  I believe the Flyer track is 12 sections that make a 36" circle correct?  Is there anything just a little tighter?

Just wondering, thanks!

The diameter of a circle made with standard metal Flyer track is 40", outside edge to outside edge.  Their Pikemaster track had a tigher radius track and was employed in the All-Aboard panels, but I am not aware what that radius actually was.  The Pikemaster track is considered to be an inferior product comapred to the classic track.

Another way to get a tighter curve would be to employ flex-track such as that manufactured by Gargraves or S-Helper.  Be aware, that tighter radius curves would not be compatible with Flyer turnouts, which are built to conform to standard 20" track geometry.

I have figured out what is wrong with my brain!  On the left side nothing works right, and on the right side there is nothing left!

Hi, just wanted to add that the SHS flex track is currently not available but American Models also has flex track. It is code 148 rail instead of 137 but both work with Flyrt wheelsets, The only drawback there is that the curved part of the switch is 27 inch radius. If you decide on Gargraves track you could use Flyer switches, also 20 inch radius. Hope this helps!

What is the radius (outer rail to outer rail) of the Pikemaster track?

Problem is I don't know the different S gauge track and radii I can use yet, but learning here.

For my first simple Flyer layout I'd like to build just a little two-line layout...an oval of standard Flyer track, then inside a smaller over with turnouts if they exist at that smaller radius.
