Jack,
you are so very right - the red is very weak, and easily damaged.
appreciate your comments,
dave
CB and all.........I don't know if it is me or what, but the red lettering on the 2023s along with the beltline red trim seem particularly vulnerable to getting rubbed off. If you look at many of the ones for sale on ebay, for example, the red lettering seems to be faded more often than not.
So when you do this cleaning of the yellow areas, be careful to avoid the red lettering and red beltline striping.

IF IT WON'T COME LOOSE BY TAPPING ON IT, DON'T TRY TO FORCE IT. USE A BIGGER HAMMER.
thanks Jim, I'll give it a try.
Not sure exactly what it is, but according to my research, it appears that it must be some type of mold-release agent that Lionel used in production. I'll try the vinegar.
thanks for your time!
Warm the residue with a hair dryer and wipe it away once it turns clear.
What is the residue from? If this is calcium, vinegar is a good cleaning agent.
OK, I've tried the search function, but, without much luck; I know I've read in the past on the Forum, tips on cleaning off the white residue which is so common on these UP 2023 shells.
I know there are some non-conventional, effective ways to get rid of this stuff, but, being in my 60's, I just can't remember what they are!
Your suggestions would be most appreciated!
