The Goose should charge the battery, give that a try first. No reason to have to rip the battery out for charging. You might also need a new battery if that one is a few years old. Just make sure you get the 7 cell 8.4 volt battery and not the 6 cell 7.2 volt one that is more common.

Thanks for all the great responses they have been VERY helpful. I was successful last night in getting the Goose to run. It was the battery the entire time. I switched out the MTH battery rechargable one for a regular 9 volt. Once I shut power down to the track it still used the battery to perform the shutdown process.
Once I gave it track power again, she took off around my layout.
My question now is this...... should i leave it on the track powered up for 11 hours like the MTH battery tells me to or go to Radio Shack and buy a wall charger???
I'll try and take a quick video of it going around my layout and post later on today....

Those sounds you are hearing, various #'s of clinks & clanks, are used to define "reset" options.
When you power up, strictly conventional, keep it down in the 10~12 volt range. Let it set and charge for a bit then just cycle the direction control, the sound you don't want to hear is the dreaded "Three Clanks Of Death". If that happens it means the program is scrambled and will need to be corrected with one of those kits I mentioned earlier.

Thanks I will have to try that later tonight..... I also read in the booklet that if the battery is dead you can use a 9 volt temporarily. Maybe I can try that also... but like they said the 9 volt can't be recharged....
More juice won't get it to move, it's probably stuck in neutral. Leave it on the track with power for a few hours to see if the battery will charge.
To test the charge, turn off the transformer and see if you hear the complete engine shutdown sequence. If it cuts off quickly, the battery is probably shot.

Thanks guys for all this great information. I have actually taken a picture of the box so we know exactly which Goose I have. I have also taken a video so we can hear what is happening.....
When I read to let the battery charge up how would I go about doing that??? Do i just leave it on the track with power applied to it?? In addition if i don't have a TPC can i still use it with TMCC for more juice to at least get it to move...... I will worry about sounds and all that later if i can just get it to go around the track and stretch it's legs.....
l have a MTH 2-8-8-2 with the battery replaced with the big capacitor. If I turn the transformer up more than about 8 volts, the loco will not start. It needs a low voltage to charge up the capacitor and reset the control electronics.
If in fact it is a PS-1 Goose and it has not been run for a considerable length of time I suggest you let it sit and charge the battery before trying to run it. Secondly, my PS-1 Goose will not run with a CW-80. Since you do have a full TMCC layout by adding a Lionel TPC, if you don't have one already, you can gain some of the PS-1 & 2 functions/operations without having to fool with horn/bell button pushes. Thirdly, I suggest acquiring a new battery, or BCR, and a Proto 1 re-programing set, they are only about $25~$30 so I consider it a relatively inexpensive insurance policy.
When I was looking at at Goose several years ago in a LHS, I believe it was a PS-1. I still see the same PS-1 descriptions on Ebay today. Dead battery????

There are no switches on the until itself..... just when you turn the transformer on and off like in conventional mode..... the bell rings when i put power to it but that's it......
does that help??
Is there a reverse unit switch somewhere?
I currently have a RailKing Galloping Goose, that I have not used in a while. This is my only MTH "engine" on a full Lionel TMCC layout.
I have decided to separate the Goose and run it on it's own main line with a conventional transformer a CW-80 transformer. F
for whatever reason the Goose will only make sounds it will not move in ether direction. My question is.. Can it really be stuck in neutral? I have to think it's something silly but the darn thing wont move.... I have not used it in years and quite honestly I don't know if I ever had it running.....
Any help would be appreciated..
