If you look at the end of the handle that attaches to the transformer you will see a small screw hole on the top of the metal shaft when it is hooked under the mount. It accepts a special screw with a head that prevents the handle from detaching from the transformer when it is raised. It sounds like that special screw is missing or one with an incorrect head diameter was substituted.

ivesboy,

This is a somewhat common problem for Gilbert's deadman style transformers that occurs after longterm storage with the handle locked down.

Bending the contact arm up gently shoud fix the problem.

Sorry, it is a 17B. Upon further investigation when i let go of the arm and it pops up it loses tension on the roller arm and it falls out if it's bracket. So should i bent the roller arm up gently or the controller arm down?

I just bought a Flyer 16B to run some S gauge for my son. I am not really sure how that dead man's switch is supposed to work, but....

When i first hooked it up the variable voltage post was doing nothing. I had plenty of juice from the fixed post. I removed the terminal plate and looked inside. I noticed the roller arm was not fit into it's recess in the bottom of the control lever. I repositioned it but everytime i lift the handle up it pops back out and back to square one. Can someone school me on this????
