Your engine has two smoke units.  The one forward is of the old Post War variety, and you'll want to use 8 to 10 drops of Lionel Premium Smoke Fluid (New) in it.  The second unit is Fan Driven for the whistle, and you'll want to load it with 20 to 30 drops of Lionel Premium Smoke Fluid.

Dog,

Looking at the parts break down I see it is a piston driven Unit. I am having the same kind of issues with my Lionel Dockside and am looking into different smoke resistors to see if I can get one that will last longer. If you need to replace the burnt out element in yours it is # 33 in the parts list.

Lionel does make many engines that smoke well, that is not one of them. Follow the advice above and add some more padding and make sure the pump moves freely.

How do you get a parts manual, circuit diagram or the train. Are there any no no's when dissembling the unit.

Looks like the smoke unit is buried in the unit. Didn't want to void the warranty but at this point Oh Well!

What transformer are you using and what s the voltage to the track.

Hope this helps,

If you want SMOKE, next time buy an MTH engine.  I just had to says that, but it is true.  I have I have 5 brands of locomotives and MTH out-smokes them all.

First welcome to the forum

also these new smoke units you have to keep smoke in it or it has a high chance of burning out. thats why I look for a off/on switch on the units and turn them off when I can if not equipped ( which most are but not all) I look to see if I can add a switch for this very reason. There not anything like the post war ones we grew up with that took pill or liquid.

I've found that Tiki torch wick works good for smoke units.  Is this a fan driven smoke unit?  If so, you might consider doing the modification that Lionel posted on their site, basically enlarging the fan intake hole and removing the sleeve from the heat element.

Have one of the "first run" versions and it smokes up a storm.  Several of us have pulled the top off of the smoke unit and replaced the wicking with pink insulation.  Made sure the hole for air is not stopped up.  Had the pink touching the heat element.  Soak  her down with smoke fluid and there she goes.

Lionel Engine Smoke Feature
Posted by dog63026 on Monday, February 6, 2012 5:28 PM

Recently purchased a 6-18754 Polar Express 2-8-4 Berkshire with whistle steam effect. The smoke effect has been anemic. It's been back to Lionel(2) for a variety of issues and the smoke feature is still anemic. I'm comparing it to my very old smoke pellet steam engine from the "50's". I'm running it off of a CW-80 xformer. . .this is the third CW-80 xformer. . . 2 returned to Lionel and the current one borrowed, until I get my ZW back. . .sent it off for reconditioning.

Since I don't have any experience with the new trains I don't know what to expect from the steam effect or what to try next? Any thoughts? Is there a secondary market smoke fluid that produces better results. I don't expect to fill the basement with smoke but I would think that I should see more than a wisp of smoke when the train is running.
