Totally agree, In my humble estimation the 1666 is one of the finest small locos that Lionel ever built. I have a 1946 model in grade 8 which I bought several years ago for $125 with tender. If a person wants one and can pick one up in that price range or even less I'd say go for it. I love mine.

Built by Lionel from 1938 through 1942 and again in 1946, it was one of the very best running locomotives they ever built. ($10.75 in 1938 dollars) As the top of the O-27 locomotive line, it may have been THE best selling, highest production of any pre-war (WW II) locomotive. The shape and stile of the New York Central Hudson but put on a 2-6-2 wheel base it looked very realistic. The pre-war was always paired with the 1689 "coffin" tender, the post-war with a realistic 2466 "coal" tender.
The pre-war is often found converted to post-war operation just by "upgrading" the tender. Almost any repair part is available.
Unfortunately, because so many are still out their and running well, depending on condition, they are easily found at train shows in the $75 to $150 range.
Note: The same Boiler Casting was used for the O-27 gauge 1664E (2-4-2) and the O gauge 224E (2-6-2 but with the O gauge motor)
