MTH Steam Engine
Posted by emk on Saturday, February 4, 2012 6:43 AM

I'm thinking about buying an MTH 4-6-2 K-4s Pacific Steam Engine w/Proto - PRR Cab# 5446 Product Number: 30-1138-1.  This is an older model, but a classic engine.  I know I'll have to replace a battery. Can anyone give me some feedback on its quality and the pros/cons of purchasing it?

EMK, I don't have that specific loco but do have quite a few MTH PS-1 locos. Only had one where I scrambled the operating board but I bought the MTH repair chip kit and fixed the problem in 10 minutes or less. At around the 5 year mark for my PS-1 locos I replaced the batteries with the BCR compacitor and have never had to mess with batteries or scrambled boards since. Some of these locos are MTH early releases so they are quite old with one heck of a lot of hours & miles logged in. Considering that these locos were manufactured during the early years of electronic locomotives they have pretty decent sounds and are super strong pullers.

Click on the "book" icon for the 36 page "Owner's Manual"  ----   Click on the "gear" icon for the exploded view and parts list.

P.S.  "BCR" is the way to go

Sorry, typo!  "BCR" page 19 of March "Classic Toy Trains".  I replace all my PS1 batteries with them.

Thanks... seems that, if I get one of the older engines (PS-1), I should install the BCR.

Yep, saves a lot of frustration down the road. I had picked up a mint PS-1 Maersk GP-60 for next to nothing, first thing out of the box was to install a BCR. Beautiful diesel that runs and sounds exceptionally well.
