Lionel 6-28009 4-6-4 Hudson with Command Control & RailSounds Equip
Posted by AtoZ Trains on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 12:33 AM

I purchased a Lionel 4-6-4 Hudson used but sold new in box.  I put a new 9 volt battery in the tender and tried to get it to run?  The headlight, boiler fire and rear headlight on tender light up, but engine does not move.  No sounds either and try cycling the transformer and nothing.  The switch on engine is in the run position and smoke switch on.

I try hooking up a trainmaster control unit with the engine and no response.

Any suggestions?

Try resetting the engine number. However it should run in conventional mode regardless. Lionel engines DO NOT require a battery in order to run, it is used to keep the Railsounds on at low voltages. So you really don't have to use one.

Yes, I tried entering a new engine number, but did not respond?  Any other suggestions?  Is there a circuit board in the engine that may have a loose wire?

Thank you for the input, PHIL!

Did you originally try to start the steamer in TMCC with engine ID #1  ?

No, tried first with straight transformer MTH 4000 conventional with no response @ a friend's house.  Then took it home and tried a ZW with nothing.  Then hooked it up to the ZW with TMCC with no response.  Tried eng 1 and the the two digit's of the tender numbers in a couple combinations, then tried to program a number in with no luck?

Looks like you may have run out of options, could very well be a bad board since you get no response in either conventional or command control.

My first step would be to swap out the R2LC board for one in a working locomotive.

OK, this board is in the tender or in the engine.  I have had the tender shell off to install the battery and everything looked in order there.  I have not removed the engine shell yet?  I will go on line with Lionel and see if I can print a parts diagram before I pull the engine shell.

Thank you for the input.
