PW 675 Problem
Posted by alcofanschdy on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 7:47 PM

I have a 675 that didn't go into reverse.  I inspected the e-unit and saw a tooth broken on the barrel and replaced it.  I tested the chassis on the track with the e-unit jusst riding on the top making contact and every thing worked fine.  Then I put  the unit all the way in its place and tested again and it would only run in reverse.  It also went thru a sequence where I would send power to it 4 times then go into reverse, power 4 times then reverse ad nauseum.  Now it just sits there and does nothing.  However the unit seems to be going the motions of running right.  Any one have any ideas on fixing this thing or should I get a new unit.    Am I doing something stupid?  Thanks in advance

Make sure that nothing shorted out when you re-installed the e-unit.  I don't own a 675, but I have pinched wires when I have reassembled other items.  Depending on which wire gets pinched, a short can stop omtion in one direction or both directions.

Loose connections are another thing to check.  Try re-soldering all of the connections.

Another possibility is that the contact fingers on the e-unit are bent and are not contacting the drum well enough to provide dependable connections.

Good luck.

I second 8ntruck's suggestion about looking for pinched wires.  I do have a 675, and I can tell you that it wasn't designed with easy service in mind.  It's very easy to pinch a wire when you're putting one back together, as I've learned myself on more than one occasion.

It sounds like the contact "fingers" are not making proper contact with the drum in some positions.
There are a number of causes, including:

dirty fingers
bent fingers
insufficient tension on fingers
DIrty drum
Malformed drum
flash on contact area of the drum.

Had the same problem except it  wouldn't go in forward. Kept jacking with it and finally squirted some wd40 in the e unit handle slot. Bingo ! now works, (knock on wood.)

Also, on the 675/2025/2035 series; if the solder lugs and wire on the e-unit stick out a little too far they may contact the boiler casting causing a short.  I've had to insulate a couple with tape or heat shrink tubing.
