If the steps are getting bent when it crashes because it's going too fast, then perhaps the solution is to not go too fast.
Doug and John,
Tks for replies,
I have ordered 2 more and will leave them off of the Docksider, I can't see any way to shorten them but that would work. Only in forward because the rear does not have the same steps. It has never gone through these switches smoothly but if too fast it will crash.

Kevin,
Does it only do this is one direction or does it behave the same in either direction ?
Could it be a problem of flange size vs depth of track or even a pick-up roller jamming ?
For one of my earlier Christmas layouts I had a couple of 027 remote control turnouts for reverse loops and the Docksiders would go thru, not smoothly but they did go thru w/o derailing.

I haven't looked, but any chance you could shorten them a bit to make them less prone to this problem?
I have had the misfortune of bending the front steps twice on my Lionel US Steel 0-6-0 Dockside Switcher # 76 as it crosses over and has occasionally jumped off my 027-42" R switches. Both times of course they break off when you try to straighten them.
Any suggestions on how to stop this or some kind of fix short of removing them.
Or should I just buy new ones and leave them in the box uninstalled?
Tks,
Kev.
