They're probably not slipping, just very small diameter.  Like all freight engines, you're getting tractive effort in return for speed.

I don't have the AT&SF berk but do have the Great Northern Berk. Smoke output is average, does leave a continuous stream but not overpowering. I have not had any problems with speed and have pulled 8 to 10 traditional size / weight freight cars with no issues.

If it's like the UP Berk I have then it will have fairly small diameter drivers so It is not going to be a speedster. As to the smoke, the smoke unit on mine burned out and I need to fixit  but haven't yet done so.

Lionel Powerful Berkshire?

I recently just purchased a Lionel Santa Fe Super Freight set.  The locomotive and tender are diecast.  The locomotive looks powerful but doesn't seem to have a very high top speed.  You can view the set I got here http://www.lionel.com/Products/Finder/ProductDetail.cfm?ProductNumber=6-31945&expandBranch=0&Keywords=&CategoryID=499&RailLineID=&CatalogId= also the smoker is weak compared to all my other Lionel locomotives even the small 0-6-0 Docksider I have.

I am just making sure that this normal operation for this locomotive.

Thanks,

Kevin
