The 2001 Vol.1 Lionel catalog lists a J3a Hudson #28072. The catalog picture shows the loco with Boxpok drivers. However, the actual box art and model have the loco with Scullin disc drivers. Does anyone know why Lionel decided to change the drivers pictured in the catalog?
.
I don't know why it actually came with Scullins, but you could buy a set of Boxpoks and replace them. Apparently a lot of buyers complained and Lionel offered the replacements. I prefer the Boxpoks, and am glad my 2002 J3a came with them.
????
In the real world the 50 J3 Hudsons that were ordered in 1935, 25 were built with Boxpok Drivers and 25 with Scullin Disc. Even the Streamlined Hudsons were devided,5445 - 5449 Boxpok, 5450 - 5454 Scullin Disc based on Al Staufer's great book "Thoroughbreds".
