Have you done any rewiring inside the loco? Does the loco operate properly?  The polarity of the truck magnets cannot be changed, and has nothing to do with your problem. Your scenario only makes sense if the trucks were completely insulated from the frame, and you somehow managed to make the frame live.

Here is a wiring diagram of your loco.

Hi, Mark,

You're liable to get more (and better) answers in the Classic Toy Trains forum. I'll move this message over there for you. Happy railroading!

Lionel 2333 Headlight Problem
Posted by Glacier Bear on Monday, January 16, 2012 10:23 AM

In rebuilding my single motor 2333, I have a wiring/polarity issue in that the headlight, which normally works when the black wire is soldered to the red wire on the enit, only works now when I touch it to either neutral outside rail or the metal part of the truck(only the middle part of truck, ie., stainless steel pin that attaches the truck to the body or the 'block' piece of the same metal behind the pin.

Of course it was working fine a few days ago wired directly to the e unit in tandem with the red wire from the pickup line.  Hve I somehow reversed polarity int the front truck magnet or somethong else???
