I doubt you hurt the value, a good condition 392 will only bring $700, excellent maybe $1200, the repaint on Ebay is already at $600 so I see no problem, times have changed most do not want beat up paint.

Hi, lionel2,  eBay has an auction for a repainted black 392E/tender ending Jan 8.  Here is the link:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Prewar-Lionel-Standard-Gauge-No-392E-Steam-Engine-Tender-/200694858641?pt

My old TM guide gives the value for a 392E black/brass/copper w/384T as $1300.  check the auction price tomorrow for a comparison.

Value wise.  yes, it would lower the value unless it's in real bad condition. I would only repaint something that would look more pleasing to me. Meaning I would prefer a like new finish instead of an old rusty looking piece.

Now with that said if its in good to ex condition I would say don't but if its good minus and below I would personally probably look into repainting it or having it repainted.

The original poster specifically asked about values. My personal preference is to have items in original finish. I'd rather have an original piece in almost any condition rather than a refinished or reproduction item.

Again its up to the owner and thats what I was trying to reply to each there own now the bottom line is its really up to the present owner I have had some real nice restored items and some that were original that were in fair shape at best as for paint condition it boils down to what you want on your layout/collection it like asking about weathering an train item I have seen some that I thought looked great but still can't bring myself to do it.

We have yet to see a pic of item being asked about which a coule have asked or at least one did.

to me it depends on the present condition. If you buy trains for investment point i wish you luck. Now with that said if its in good to ex condition I would say don't but if its good minus and below I would personally probably look into repainting it or having it repainted. second is this something you plan to keep or is it just a temporary item. If you plan to keep then what does the value matter as its something you want for your pleasure and then you need to decide do I want original or do I want it to look excellent.

Aaaahhh, the 392e!  My favorite engine of all time!  Big Smile  Unfortunately, I don't own one!  Crying  But if I did, I wouldn't care less if the paint was from the 1930's or the 2000's.  I'd be happy either way!  AND, I'd run it too!!!  Smile, Wink & Grin

Trains, trains, wonderful trains.  The more you get, the more you toot!  Big Smile

IMHO, a well done repaint is going to be worth less than the same item in the most common paint scheme in very good or better original finish.
While some folks are happy to own refinished items, others only want pieces in original finish, no matter what the condition.

Hello, does a repainted Lionel 392E with 384T tender that have been repainted hurt the value of them??  Is there a differnce in price from an original and a repaint??  Thanks.
