I thought I asked this one before but can't find my thread. What is light and can be used as a load in hopper cars and run through an Ertl 12948 farm type grain auger? I have some rocks you put at the bottom of the fish tank but they jam in the Ertl auger. I need things that are smaller.

Check out the coarse pool filter sand, larger grains than regular sand but smaller then fish tank gravel.

But how heavy would it be? I think weight would be a major factor. At the co-op today I looked at bulk rice and other grains. But I think food sources might attract bug/insects to it and create a larger problem.
Try Lionel or other plastic coal. If too large, cut it up. Then paint it your color you want for grain. Plastic is does not jam and that is why Lionel uses it for coal tipple and etc.

Some brands of cat litter that have a granular texture may be usable. It is definately lighter than sand or fine gravel
I have two cats and using cat little could be a disaster.
Glass or plastic beads from a bead shop or Michaels?

Now that might work. Probably cheap, light, not same as whats in the litter box and not food based.
