Need new motor for Lionel SF 1095 Diesel
Posted by Hugh Betcha on Sunday, January 1, 2012 3:24 PM

Suggestions/guidance requested

have 1970's vintage, O gauge, 12" long coupler to catcher, Lionel Santa Fe #1095 w. headlight

Trying to refresh old set.  Motor hums but will not turn in either direction..

Is it possible to rebuild the motor?  Or is a replacement available someplace?

Will consider buying a newer model motor and adapting the case to fit the smaller size of the new motors.

This unit has silver gray plastic case, with 2 4-wheel trucks  Motor is on the rear.  No front coupler.

Welcome to the forums.  You'll get a better response if you repost your question in the Classic Toy Trains forum.  The Classic Trains forum focuses on prototype railroading.

I believe Hugh is posting his info request on Classic Toy Train forum.

Hugh, if the motor is dead on your Santa Fe diesel you may want to check with one of the Lionel parts suppliers for a replacement.

First off, before replacing the motor, how about a little trouble-shooting?

This could be the E-Unit and not the motor.  Have you taken the shell off and looked it over?  Did you make sure the E-Unit selector was turned on?  Is the motor frozen when you try to manually turn the armature?  Have you removed the motor from the truck, it could be something in the drive gear jamming it.

For starters, I think what you have is a Marx engine, not a Lionel. the advice above is good. it likely just needs a little lube  and some TLC to get it running again.

If the motor is indeed shot, I don't believe anyone makes replacements. Your best bet would be to find another 1095 with a bad shell and swap out the motor. If you are going to run this engine on newer track with new or not Marx switches, you will want to make sure the motor is a double reduction type. What this means is that the gears that are cast into the wheels do not go all the way to the edge of the wheel. If they do go all the way to the edge of the wheel, they will make the wheel too fat to go through a modern switch without derailing

But I digress, because it most likely needs a bit of oil.

Hope this helps,

Good point on the Marx, not Lionel, I think you're right.

Would this be your locomotive?  This is a Marx SF 1095.

Hugh,   Welcome

I think J White is correct.

If it looks like this then it is for sure a Marx train.

If nothing else works for you.

These come up on E-bay so you could do a search for Marx 1095 . If you have a good shell I have seen them sell with bad shells for cheap.

Tks,

Kev.

Thanks to all who replied.  Yes its the MARX unit - pix matches.

I opened up the motor and found the the brushes were too worn to make contact.  I've cleaned out a lot of gunk, and hope to get it running by replacing the brushes.  Everything moves freely now.

Does anyone know where to get them??    They are plain carbon cylinders about 1/4 in diameter and about i/2 inch long.  New springs would be wise too.

I'll also look for a used one with a working motor.

Thanks again.  I' impressed by how helpful you all have been.  Happy New Year.

The best source for parts I know of is Robert Grossman. Here's a link:

Some Lionel parts dealers carry some parts for Marx as well.

Hope this helps,
