Just bought some nicely detailed Pennsylvania Madison coaches (MTH O-27) and am looking for ideas on what kind of Pennsylvania steam engine would look good pulling these. I'd prefer an MTH Rail king engine, but am open to suggestions.
Not familiar with MTH locomotives, however, the PRR used K4, E6 steam and GG1 electric engines for passenger service and probably a few others.
I know Railking does a K4 which would probably be perfect to go along with your coaches. They also do an M1, which was mostly a freight engine, but they did see some time in passenger service.
If you want to get a bit more pricey, Lionel does a great scale model of an E6, which were also passenger locomotives throughout their career. In terms of scale locomotives, this engine is on the less expensive side.

Of coarse you could always get an S-2 and I think MTH did a version or two of it and I think one was Rail-King but not sure I do know Williams did a couple versions and Lionel has done a few both postwar and modern

The PRR T1 was designed to be a high speed passenger loco. Two were built in 1942 and were scrapped in 1953.50 were built in 1945-46 and lasted until 1952-56.K4s,4-6-2, were in use until 1959.E6s,4-4-2 were in use until 1953.The S2,6-8-6,turbine was built in 1944 and scrapped in 1952.Ther was only one S2,#6200.
The above is only important if you are concerned about being historically correct.
If they were my cars and I wanted to run them behind a SD 90 I would.
The PRR sometimes used passenger locos on freight trains and freight locos on passenger if it was needed.I did see K4s and T1s on freight trains.
The Railking Turbines come up on E-Bay quite often at pretty reasonable prices. I have the MTH Dealer Appreciation Turbine, really a smooth and powerful runner.

Your passenger cars would be dated to the early 20th century, so a diminutive "high-stepping" engine would fit in right nicely. Here are some suggestions:
Railking 4-6-0 Camelback (hey, they're cool looking) #30-1180-0
MTH/Premier 2-8-0 H-3 Consolidation #20-3430-2
MTH/Premier 4-4-2 Atlantic #20-3245-1
MTH/Premier 4-4-0 #20-3156-1
LIONEL E-6 Atlantic #6-28005. (Fifey's pick)
Pricewise, the first and last samples are least expensive, but all would look appropriate with your varnish.
I can speak for the excellent quality of MTH railking products. I have 2 (a C&O streamlined hudson and a B&O 2-6-0) and the Hudson is great. I cannot speak for the mogul yet because I just bought it and it has not arrived in the mail yet, but I am already certain it will be equally as wonderful.
The MTH Railking line has a nice selection of Pennsy steam. They have a non streamlined K4 in several schemes, a streamlined K4, a 2-10-0 with 2 different tender types, a B6 0-6-0, a 2-8-2 Mikado, and a few others. Def go with a K4 if you are considering it. I have heard great things about it. MTH makes great products.

Nick! :)
I also agree. MTH has great engines for the price, especially it's railking line. I am also currently in looks to get a Pennsy steam engine for my layout, and have been looking at either the 6-8-6 S2 Turbine, or the streamlined 4-6-2 Torpedo. Especially for me who loves streamlined passenger cars i think both would do the job nicely. Good luck and keep me posted on what you decide.
