WILLIAMS RIO GRANDE LOCOMOTIVE #5720 sound issues
Posted by kemacan on Saturday, December 24, 2011 6:51 PM

Any suggestions on how to turn off the horn/sounds on a williams unit?  under body of unit has a location with "on off" but not switch, just a hold covered in plastic.  the train runs great but the horn/sounds turn on about every 10 seconds and stay locked on with terrible sounds.  When I hit the sound switch on the power unit it turns off for about 10-15 seconds and kicks in again.  I would just love to disconnect sounds totally.

Welcome to the forum.

its suppose to be the other way around sound when you hit the sound switch. 1st have you tried reversing the wires on your transformer befor we go drastic measures. ( may sound crazy but it might work)

if so and it really bothering you, you could open the shell and cut one of the wires to the speaker but leave your self enough room so if you wanted you could splice them back together. this I would think twice about befor doing so.

it sounds like you got a bad sound board for it to do that.

Yep, I had a Williams U30C that did the same think. It would let out a bleep 2 or 3 times on each trip around the layout. I finally just cut one of the wires to the speaker.

If it is a newer Williams by Bachmann, see if there is a two wire connector that can be removed from the circuit board. The replacement circuit boards, shown on the Bachmann site, have a place to plug-in the sound unit. Don't cut any wires if you can help it!
