Kev,

I attached some photos of our water scene on our old layout.  Basically, I cut out the foam to create the area I wanted for the water.  I painted the exposed plywood with some basic blue latex paint (next time I would use a darker color, but I had this blue on hand). I used a piece of scrap wood to block the edge so the product would not run onto the floor.  I poured and spread a little of the product and let it dry.  I added little pebbles to the edge of the water and then poured more of the product.  After it dried I removed the wood scrap.  It's not the best water scene but we were pleased with it especially for our first time.  We would add some shrubs next time as well, and probably a small fishing boat.

Thanks for the hint Kevin!

The wife and I are going today to Hobby Lobby to look at stuff. The only Michaels around here closed.

I have some foam and I know how big and what size I want so I will look into this. Sounds good. Yes  Wish you could post it would be nice to see your layout.

I put my pictures on a free Shutterfly account then copy and past them to the forum from there. It is easy if I can do it.  http://www.shutterfly.com/

I didn't see it suggested here but I had this same situation.  I cut a 1 inch peice of insulating foam into the desired shame and size you want.  The next thing to do is take a rasp and start digging however deep you think you want it or that you can go without going through the bottom.  Paint the bottom with what ever color you would like to see through your water.  Place shrubbs and bushes where you want them. Pour you water in the pond you just made after the paint dries of course.  You can use resin if you like from stores like Michaels, they sell pigmentation too for it.  Let everything dry and glue to layout with Gorilla glue.  Add matching ground cover and you are done.  It takes a couple of hours but it's easy and you get what you want not what someone else wants you to have. I haven't figured out how to post pictures here or I would.  My resin pouring was bad first time but it still came out nicely. I reccomend trying it.  I used scrap foam I had on hand but that pond they show on Bob's train box cost more than a peice of foam and some paint.  You can also print 40% off coupons from Michaels weebsite which cuts the cost of supplies almost in half.

Just my 4 cents

Kevin

Thanks, Guys,

I have seen both of those styles and articles

I am working on something using LEMAX Ocean Display Mat cut to the size I want it with epoxy or Plexiglas on top. My problem is I want something that sits on the table and can be moved if the layout changes. Since I am still in the building stages I hate to have anything fixed past a wire feed hole. I should have said this in my first post. I am leaning on the Plexiglas idea because the glass can also act as support for the edging scenes.

Tks,

Kev

Kev,

CTT's last layout project had a fishing pond.  They detailed how they made in the article.  However, if I remember correctly, you didn't use any foam or similar material to be able to landscape which may make it difficult to get the depth you’re looking to achieve.  As Fife pointed out, the pool BTB displayed is pretty nifty.  I'm also pretty sure Dept 56 or Lemax may have some as well.

If I’m wrong and you did use foam, I made a lake using Woodland Scenics products I purchased at Hobby Lobby.  I was able to pour it in layers to create depth, and I also added pebbles which also helped.  The product covered it nicely.

Check out Bob's Train Box 39.  Neat product.

...and remember, it's not just a pond; it's a reflecting pool.

Scenic Express has a set of a family fishing figures. I also found a canoe with figures that was close to 1/48 size at Hobby Lobby.

Kev, I tried to find a link that I had some time ago but no luck. It was to a youtube video that had a couple of guys fishing from a little rowboat. The cool thing about it though was that it was kinda like a cross sectional view so you could see the fish below the water and the whole thing was animated. Maybe one of the "Pot" guys will still have the link, I e-mailed to everyone kinda bustin the chiefs chops. If ya can't razz your friends who can ya razz !
