226E Set Question

Was the 226E ever sold in a set?  If so, what cars came in the set?  None of my cars look right behind the engine.  The tin plate cars seem too small behind the engine.

Yes, it came in a number of sets. Skimming through the prewar catakigs that I have:
In 1938 it was cataloged with tin cars

193W - 2812 gondola, 2810 crane, 2820 floodlgiht, 2817 caboose
191W - 2815 "Oil car", 2816 coal car, 2817 caboose
190W - 2613 pullman, 2615 baggage, 2614 ovservation

In 1940 there were four sets with 2800 series tin cars, and one set with three semiscale cars (no hopper)

IN 1941 there are five sets, incuding one with three "Madison" cars, one with three semiscale cars, and the rest with 2800 series tin cars.

 According to Lionel: A Collector's Guide and History to Lionel Trains   Volume 1: Prewar 0 Gauge,       page 91, the 226E was the "leader of the 0 gauge line" and came in sets with the 2800 series and semi-scale freight cars, and 2600 series and Irvington cars. When it came with the semi-scale freight cars, the tender was numbered 2226WX, the X designating the lower coupler needed for the semi-scale cars.
