Can anyone tell me what is required to operate a Lionel Railsounds box car properly? I'm considering adding steam sound for my PW 2055 w/ a KW transformer.
I have the B&O steam sound boxcar and a the Frisco diesel sound boxcar that I run with my conventional trains without sound. At least on my layout, I don't have to do anything, when I apply power to the track, the locomotive sound starts up and the Whistle / horn / or bell becomes operable. I run my conventional trains through MTH DCS so I am not sure if there is anything else required if not using DCS, I wouldn't think so.

Got it ... being that I use a KW with the horn function built in, I assume a bell activation switch would be required to activate the bell sound. Just curious ... on your steam engine, do you get 2 whistle sounds ... one from the tender and one from the box car?? Is that how it works??
If you use the KW you may have to add a "standalone" whistle/horn activation button.
Hopefully someone can "chime" in, no pun intended , on this subject.

Only thing you need to add if you want both whistle/horn and bell is a second sound button. Easiest to use is the Lionel 6-5906 activation button.

I there is a whistle in the tender I do get two whistles, one from the tender and one from the boxcar.
OK ... I've had success making homemade whistle/bell sound activation switches .... so far so good and did this because my Lionel 5906 died. Second ... is it weird sounding with the two whistles going off at the same time?
It certainly gives off a different sound but I wouldn't consider it weird. Better sounding than the PW beep beep horns.
For the whistles anyway, if having two of them sounds odd, you could put a piece of tape around the pickup roller on the tender. If that won't work, possibly find a way to wedge it up off the center rail, or snip the wire coming off of it.

Just put tape over the round hole on the bottom of the tender. That will keep the fan from drawing air for the whistle. Easy to remove as well.
good thoughts ... thanks
