Need Under-Layout Switching information
Posted by Greg K on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 9:49 AM

Anyone have any info on how to convert O gauge to under layout switch machines? My thought is as I convert to fastrack I would buy manual fastrack switches and purchase under layout switch machines. Are there any articles written by CTT on the subject? Thanks!

There was an article or two in previous issues of CTT mag. but could be a nightmere for an amature to attempt to mount switch machines under a layout. Unless you are into mechanics, I suggest using the factory switches. Lee F.

Tortoise DC stall motors from Circutron have been around and very effective for a long time and are ideal for under layout switching. You can power them with a recycled 12 volt wall wart or an old HO Power Pak.  Or, if wishing to operate from AC power in Command mode, activated through ASC modules via the handheld remote, inline diodes from Radio Shack will handle the AC conversion to DC.

The switch points are moved by a spring wire reaching from the Tortoise up through a slot in the benchwork and into  a hole in the throwbar. The Tortoise is a "stall" motor and can simply be operated via a single pole on/off toggle switch----it will not burn out .

Tortoise comes with good instructions on attaching the spring wire and notes on optional wiring regarding additional features beyond basic track switch operation.  Plenty of folks are available to help with advice on physical installation of the motor under the layout.
