Lionel O Gauge De-Coupling Track

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this question.

I've just added a siding to my layout by putting in a switch followed by a straight section of track and then the de-coupling track. The switch continues to work fine. But when I press the decouple button, the magnet does not seem to activate - so the decouple does not occur - instead the train switches from neutral position to either a forward or backward direction. I think I have all the wiring correct - but I'm pretty new to this. (Even if I just put 2 cars on the siding over the decouple track - so that no part of the "train" is on the switch, the magnet doesn't seem to be doing it's job.)

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Check your wiring. It sounds like you're creating a short rather than sending power to the magnet. when you press the button. This will cause the the engine to move out of neutral.
