Sounds to me like it needs lubrication. The 726/736 locos have a lot of places to oil. I don't think the motor should be getting warm.
should be the larger. its a 46 with a horizontal mounted motor. looks crammed for space compared to my turbine. i have no issues delivering voltage. im concerned with the high voltages required and the relativly slow speeds achieved at the high voltages. at around 10 volts its crawling. the brush sleeves get pretty hot after a few laps around the tracks even pulling no load. ive had the whole thing apart. new brushes, spotless commuter plate, pickup rollers are good, brass plate for contact roller plate is cleaned and good, all wires and solder points are good. ive heard the 46 model is slow but i wouldnt think the motor should get that warm, especially under no load
Does your 726 have the large stack motor or the regular size motor?? The large stack is about 33% larger, there are more field plates added to it. Part number 726M-1 and the regular is 726M-41. I have both the 1946 and 1947 versions. The 1946 version does take more juice to get her going, thats why I use a Z transformer. It needs all that volts to get it up to speed and smoking and whistling. The gears are different than the 1947 version I believe. Mine have red brushplates, which make them a little more rare, but still the motors are the same. I also have some 671, 2020, 681 and 682 turbines. Swapping gears for the later version I think means that they replaced the 726M-1 with the 726M-41, they just put in a smaller motor that has better gear ratio and spins faster and does not require much volts. hi guys, been reading for a while, finaldly joined..... i recently accuired a non-running 1946 726 berkshire. i gave it a full dissassembly, to include the brushplate. cleaned and lubed, new brushes, fresh grease, and re assembled. the motor is "noisey" compared to my other post war locos and require 15-16 volts to have a decent 40 mph appearance. i have read that the 46 loco had a very low gear ratio but i cant confirm this. i also heard that people have swapped the gearsfor later versions, but again, i cant confirm hat parts to use. the motor in it sounds like it's spinning relativy fast compared to my 671 turbine. any help is appreciated
