New to trains...Please help!
Posted by sinze2 on Friday, December 9, 2011 7:45 PM

We got my Father in Laws 194? Lionel refurbished last year.  We took it out this Christmas time and it's making a grinding noise.  My son is 6 and is REALLY loves trains.  I would hate to have him miss out on playing with this train this year.  If anyone can help, i would REALL appreciate it!!!

Please post the engine amd car numbers so that we can further diagnose the problem.  The cab number and car numbers should be stamped somewhere on each piece.

First step is clearly going to be to lube it and make sure nothing is caught in the gears.

sinze2,

Welcome

I agree with both answers given. Can you post a picture from photobucket or shutterfly that would help a lot,

Thank you all for getting back to me.  I am pretty computer lame so posting pics is like rocket science to me.  My husband found a guy in Sacramento that is going to look at it on Monday.   We think that lube or lack there of might be the problem.  There didn't seem to be anything caught.  We had them stored quite well in the boxes that the man who restored it gave us.  I hope that's all it is.  Someone on another forum suggested it might be pinions?  I don't even know what that means. lol.  My son is a train nut.  He has a wooden Thomas and a battery thomas set up in his room and he has taken over a living room with the Lionel Polar Express O gauge he got for his birthday.  I didn't realize this was such a pricey hobby.  lol  After buying the train, the extra track and the characters, that was it.  I think Santa will have to provide the rest.  The old Lionel only comes out at Christmas which makes it extra special.  This year we have the old Lionel as well as The Polar Express around the tree!   I love that he loves this and i'm excited that there is such a great community of enthusiasts to get ideas from and bounce ideas off of.  Thank you all again and i'll update you on the diagnosis and prognosis when I get it!

Keep us informed and if you have any more questions we will try to offer possible solutions. Sounds like that Polar Express will be getting a work-out this Holiday Season.

A pinion is just another name for a small gear.  That diagnosis was not too helpful, was it.  It reminds me of physicians who, when they can't figure out what's wrong, will say that your ailment is "ideopathic".
