The 6- 51201 Rail Chief Cars were Cataloged in the Lionel Catalog, 1990 Book Two, page 30 - 31.
They were made to mate with the "re-run" of the Full Scale 700E Hudson, and is illustrated on a 2 page spread as a duplicate of the 1937 set. I do not have the cars, but I do have that Hudson. The Hudson comes with a "O" SCALE, WORKING, KNUKLE COULPER on the Tender. The "oversize" standard Lionel Coulper was shipped in the box. Quote the Catalog, " Tender Features Include : --- Operating scale die-cast coulper --- Retrofit standard Lionel knukle coulper."
The 1990 listing of the Rail King Cars states "Riding behind the Hudson, or any other large steam locomotive, it is a beautiful sight." This might indicate a Lionel sized Knukle coulper was shipped. I may be wrong, but, remembering 22 years ago, I think the Rail King lead car had a non-operating Lionel sized coulper, maybe ?
The 1937 version must have had an "O" Scale coulper as was used on all the "Full Scale" line, maybe ?

Try George Tebolt (search it on google), he usually has any prewar part I need. Those cars are copies of the prewar cars so I assume they use the same piece. I've seen the amount of parts he has, at train shows he buys about 6-7 tables and has parts covering all the tables and up on along pegboard along the wall. I'm quite positive he's got that coupler.

I am having the same problem as I am missing the coupler also and have no idea where to look for one. Glenn
Hello all,
I just got a used set of Lionel Classics Rail Chief cars (6-51201) and unfortunately the coupler that connects the cars to the tender (apprently it clips onto the front car) is missing. SInce there is no paperwork, I do not even know what I am looking for. Anyone got a picture or a scan of the paperwork showing this part? Anyone know if this part was used on any other passenger cars? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks, David
