My Marx 027 tinplate Christmas layout
Posted by dsmith on Wednesday, November 16, 2011 10:01 PM

Here is my 2011 Christmas Marx tinplate layout for this year.  All track is 027 tubular, remote switches are Marx 027 and the 45 degree crossing is Lionel(modified to work with the Marx engines with the fat gear ) .  I usually set up my layout after Thanksgiving but this year I had good reason to set it up early.  I had a scheduled hand operation on Nov. 15 and I figured I will be one handed for the next month so I started working on it in early November.

Very nice tinplate layout. The crossover to an inner loop should provide plenty of action for under the tree.

Looks terrific and the Marx trains combined with your town are really colorful The track layout has just enough variety ( I imagine ) to keep it interesting, without being overly complicated..prone to derailments I built a Marx windup Christmas layout on a  low "coffee table" I built. I am still pondering what to do this year.....thanks for the inspiration! We have two dogs and two cats who occasionally play-chase each other and for this reason I am thinking standard gauge or G...What is that mat ( white) covering?

Love it. My first electric train was a Marx 999 freight set. I ran that train till it got so hot it wouldn't run. Dad figured it was broke but after it cooled off it ran again for many years. I sold it to a neighbor boy for $5. as he was poorer than us.

I love it too!  Big Smile  Excellent work!  Yes  Is that a candy tin store I see just to the left of the big pink building?

And Sir James 1, you just reminded me of a thread I wanted to do round this time of year!  Big Smile

Becky, there are five lithographed cookie tin buildings on the layout including the pink one and the one to the left.  I purchased four of them last year at Walmart, half price after Christmas.

A very nice looking layout. I hope your hand is recovering well. I hope there's a video in the works for this layout, like the ones in years past.

Becky, i occasionally find similar buildings at my local Goodwill, Salvation Army, or other thrift stores. They should really start to come out now, with the Christmas season approaching.

While this shot was meant to show off the bridge, you can see some of the buildings I've picked up behind it:

I have the four cookie tin Walmart buildings from last year on this year's Christmas layout.  They look real good with my old Marx tinplate trains and tin Girard Station.

I searched for those tins too late last year and seeing how well proportioned they are in relation to the other structures and the trains themselves, I can only say they must have been a real bargain as most comparable ones I have found made specifically for layouts are $50.00 -$100.00 plus each. Your layout looks better with every view.

I look forward to more photos or a video..even better. I just purchased the same bridge. I am intrigued by those tin buildings. I would like to see more. They fit in so well as in David's Christmas Layout..

Beautiful layout Dave!

When you say "cookie tin", you mean they sell cookies in those tins? They look great! But I don't know that I've seen anything like that down here. I'll have to look closely this year and see what I can find.

Those Wal-Mart tin buildings look like Louis Marx made them himself. Perfect!
