TomikawaTT,

Do you have photos of your layout posted anywhere?  I am in the Air Force and moved to Japan last month.  It would be neat to see your layout since I am living out here right now.

Thanks,

Joe

I just came across this thread.

When I first saw the title, I assumed that you were referring to the headquarters of A.C. Gilbert Company.   BowBowBow

Kevin,

I'm glad that you already done it.

On the church windows, I put some Christmas wrapping paper, which has a small color pattern design, closely resembling stained glass.

Take Care,

Ralph

Ralph,

Thanks I already painted flat black on the inside and will cover that with white paint. I have to install new windows as the old ones didn't come out well but I'm prepared for that.

RRaddict,

I had a red cab. that I put a lamp in and light was glowing through its shell.

I had to use dull black paint for the inside and coated it three times, for it to work proper.

If, you want a different interior color, just paint over the black paint.

Good Luck,

Ralph

Thats because so many train enthusiasts are pastors Smile (Think Rev. Lovejoy from the Simpsons).  I am included in that group, as is the retired pastor who passed along some of his collection to me!

Well there are always the Plasticville models.

You can see the cathedral clearly but just around the corner behind the schoolhouse you can make out the gray roofed parish church.  Any of them can be modified fairly easily for lighting.  If you assemble the model and then paint the interior surfaces white, it will block wall penetration and enhance the light given off by a low wattage bulb.  I also like to glue bits of clear plastic saved from packaging into the windows to act as glass, then back them up with tracing or tissue paper to give the windows an even glow.  Another suggestion for a cool cathedral with a thin depth would be the Raylite or Paramount churches sold in the 60's.  Many of them came as lighted music boxes.

Speaking of houses of worship has anyone ever seen a church that is not made by Model Power or MTH? I'm looking and the two mentioned are poorly made the light shines through the walls.

Not a church or a synagogue, but a Buddhist Wat.  I don't have an aversion to using any time of place of worship on my layouts, it's just that I tend to model areas where they're not.  i.e. industrial river flatlands rather than towns.

Got to thinking (yes again!) ...Over all the years in the hobby, I've seen a number of different churches but never a Synagogue or Mosque on a layout.

Have you?        As always, many thanks.

I have to agree with you on a train layout I haven't seen it either.

Out in the Midwest where I came from, there were no less than two Serbian Churches complete with the wonderful onion domes of The Russian Orthodox faith. Here is one of them.

I wish someone had made a model..really unique. Further South near Chicago if I recall there is Frank Lloyd Wrights Greek Orthodox Church shaped like a flying saucer..or the flying prow of a church he designed up in Milwaukee. There's much more variety than the Gothic or clapboard Christian church.

Heres a Synagog

Nothing is more fairly distributed than common sense: no one thinks he needs more of it than he already has.

On my layout you won't see either.  Nor will you see any places devoted to the many variants of Christianity.

In the area that I model, Christians MIGHT be present - as something less than 1% of the population.  (That's of the nation as a whole.  The local percentage is probably much lower.)  On the other hand, there's an ancient Jinja (Shinto shrine) in one town, a five-tiered pagoda on a hilltop and little roadside shrines in several places.  Where?  Check my signature.
