sir james I

Yes, it can be used for whistle or bell if the engine has both

you just reverse the wires to the track. But one won't do both things, you would use 2. Wire diagrams come with them.

James, I just got the new button and swear I have it hooked up like the diagram and nothing. I reversed the wires and nope. The U is the ground and the A is the hot? I just hooked it up to a lock-on to test it before I started soldering. It's been a bad week with the ZW horn not working right and now this. Sad Any thoughts?

The ZW can put out four times the current that 22 AWG wires can handle safely.  That means that the temperature rise in the wires can be 16 times what it is rated for.  Until something on your layout draws more than about 4 amperes, you won't have a problem.  And when a 15-ampere fault occurs, you won't need the ZW's circuit breaker, since that undersized wire will probably burn out before the breaker trips.

It's safe unless your running something that draws a lot of wattage. The button may not work or last long as it was poorly designed and burns out easily. A newer #6-5906 is a much better choice and I've never had a wire problem using it..

James, will that work with a Lionel 8355? The 8251 came with that  loco, that is the only thing I need it for at this point.

Just not sure about the four 22 AWG wires and the bigger transformer. Bob has told me numerous times to use 14 AWG with the ZW and the only way I know to hook it up is the way the instructions show using a 50 or 90 watt transformer. I assume to just tap into the A and U terminal and solder the wires to the track. If it melts into liquid,  I've learned a lesson. Big Smile

Laugh don't think that I guess 1 your whistle controll not working on zw or 2 you have a williams engine your trying to get to sound its horn

Is it safe to use the 8251-50 whistle control with a postwar ZW?
