Electric Trains in Big Box Stores
Posted by Seayakbill on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 7:34 AM

So far from reports that I have read there are Lionel Electric Trains in 3 big box stores. Doesn't look like Wal-Mart or Target are going to try it again.

Sears

Menards Hardware

Wegmans Grocery

I was at the Sears store at Topanga Mall (San Fernando Valley, CA) yesterday and they have a Lionel end-cap display made  of cardboard which holds several sets: Little Lionel, Polar Express battery-run, and Penn Flyer electric set. Very compact and limited selection but well-positioned on an aisle.

"A set for every age bracket" seems to be the idea.

Boscov's Department store has Lionel trains. They have a year round toy department, Lionel is often found throughout the year.

I live in Portsmouth Ohio where we do not have many big box stores, but we do have Market Street Hardware and Toytown.  There are new Lionel and American Flyer sets on sale year round.  Currently the owner is setting up for Christmas and always has a super selection.

I just acquired a 1952 Montgomery Ward Marx Santa Fe set with the Hudson locomotive pulling the 3/16 scale litho cars.  It appears every piece was still in the box, all in excellent condition.  The box had the shipping label still attached with seven 10c stamps and one 7c stamp cancelled Noveber 1952!

Yesterday, I checked out the local Hobby Lobby.  They used to be a year-round source for trains of all scales, inculding Lionel.  However, begining last year they substantially reduced their stock of MRR supplies.  I decided to see if they were going to do anything special for Christmas.

At my local Hobby Lobby outlet I did not find any Lionel at all this year.  I did find about a dozen Bachman sets, both in HO & N.  But that appears to be the limit of their interest.

I have figured out what is wrong with my brain!  On the left side nothing works right, and on the right side there is nothing left!

When I talked to the manager of our local Hobby Lobby last year when they were blowing out their O Gauge product including Lionel he stated that the sales of O Gauge did not meet projections. The shelf space used for O Gauge would result in a better return with other product. Their O Gauge product was always on the high end unless you used the 40% off coupon that came out every week or so.

A local Menards (Milwaukee area) not only has a selection of Lionel train sets, but some Woodland Scenics Built up 0 scale structures.   I remember the Christmas I got my Lionel train set.  I even remember how it smelled.

I received the Bass Pro Shop Christmas catalog today. They will have a Lionel Train again this year but it is not the Limited Edition Bass Pro Shop set like last year. It is the Generic Lionel North Pole Express.

My local Menards has at least 2 of each set plus leftover black flatbeds with mostly trailers and a few tractors.
