They are still very good engines, made when old Lionel was still in it's greatest years. Hope you get it going and have years of fun.

I have had the whole train apart and cleaned everything so I am pretty sure that is not the problem. I had to replace the shoe, fix the couplers and replace the single and multiple contact fingers in the e-unit along with the drum. Still don't like the way the rear light mount is. I couldn't get that off to take out the motor so I just bent it out of the way and then bent it back. They should have just used a couple of screws. But it was my first train and love to see it running again.

It sat a long time, brushes seem to absorb moisture, change them and the brush springs and you'll probably find much better performance. You need to remove the motor and replace the old grease inside the power truck as well.
I just rebuilt the e-unit on my 6220 diesel switcher and it runs.....and runs pretty good to. It, however still doesn't run as good as I would like. (probably need to replace the brushes). The reason I say that is if I run it on my 4x8 test track I need almost full power of my zw, any other engine I use only needs about half power if I want to keep them on the track. Is there anyway to test my work. I did test the engine and If I put 15 amps from the transformer to the train and test the power going into the motor it only reads about 10.5 amps. Is that what it should be or is it not even a valid test. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. It has been all cleaned, oiled and lubed as this is the first time it has been running in about 40 years.....and it is thanks to all you guys that I got up the nerve to try and fix it myself.
Thanks Harold
