American flyer Frontiersman 88 locomotive restoration
Posted by Blake on Sunday, September 25, 2011 5:03 PM

My Brother recently purchased an American Flyer Frontiersman Franklin 88 locomotive, it s only missing the stack and bell. I took the body shell off and was puzzled, was this locomotive equipped with choo choo and does this locomotive use the same motor as the 4-4-2 Atlantic?

It does have smoke and choo choo. Except the unit is from the HO line so it is rather soft sounding. The motor is like all late style Gilbert motors in that it has the motor armature that is cicular instead of the flat early style.  They also came with the two position reverse unit.  Keep your wheels and track clean otherwise the locomotive will go into spasms.  Replacement parts can be had from port line hobbies

This dealer's website carries assembly and wiring diagrams for all AF locomotives.  This should help you identify what parts you may be missing.

I have figured out what is wrong with my brain!  On the left side nothing works right, and on the right side there is nothing left!
