Another Update!! Well, I put a dab of oil on a Q-tip and rubbed the shaft of the plunger on the E-Unit. Now, It does not stick at all. Moves up and down easily. As for the tender, an original replacement relay is about $40.00 from a parts dealer. I found a spare one from one of my postwar tender parts. From a 6466WX tender. I used its relay in my 1835W tender and I cleaned the brushes and springs and face of armature plate. It was very dirty and looks as if it has not ever been cleaned. Now, the tender blows the whistle on command and works very nice. Thats all the help I need. Thanks guys.
Look closely at the base of the teeth on the e-unit drum. If you see notches worn into the plastic, that could be the problem. You can smooth them out with a knife or small chisel without disassembling the e-unit.

Update!!! Well, I got the loco working. But, I opened up the tender and found that part of the relay was missing. The bottom of relay was missing, the part that makes contacts come together. Where can I get another relay?? I need to rewire the tender wires for sure. As for the loco, the E-Unit sticks, I have to tap the top of the loco to get it to switch into neutral, forward, reverse. Any way to solve this?? I think its the plunger, should I oil it up to make it slick so that it slides up and down easily? The loco runs a little sluggish. I checked the brushes and springs, all is good. The gears, I lubed them up a little bit. Anything more I can do to make it go a little bit faster?? The loco headlight had the original bulb, long one with long threads, Burned out of course. Put a new 432C in place. The boiler light works just fine. Just needs some fine tuning the loco. Wheels are nice and straight and smooth. Any help will do. Thanks.
Humm...Not a whole alot of people know how to take these kinds of trains apart. Or least people that are still alive. Most of the owners of these standard gauge trains have past on. Wish there was a book that tells you how or something. Thanks.
I don't have any information on disassembling that particular locomotive. Someone else may be able to help.
When absolutely nothing works on a locomotive, it's a pretty good bet that the problem is far upstream, that is, the wire from the pickup.
All my other loco work just fine on the same line of track. Yes, I have a 167 whistle controller hooked up to the same line of track. Still nothing works. How do I get at the inside of the pickup to see if its wired up?? You think its anything with the motor?? Could be a blown coil or armature that I am worried about. Because a replacement motor will run me $100+ on ebay or whatever. I am headed to a train show today, I will see what they got, maybe they have something I need. Thanks.
Are you sure you have voltage at the track? Will anything else run there? Assuming you have a whistle control added onto your Z transformer, it's very odd that neither locomotive nor tender works.
Assuming that's not the problem, if nothing at all works in the locomotive, the problem is probably a broken or disconnected wire from the pickup.
Hello, I have a Lionel 1835E with 1835W that I am having problems with. The loco does not run and the tender does not sound. Any ideas?? Should I check the wiring? Should I check the brushes on both the loco and tender? The wheels are all original and in great shape. The loco is 100% original, might even be original wiring. Does not have a chugger, I do not believe the 1835E ever came with a chugger. The bulbs are all present, but do not light up when power applied. I am using a Z transformer on my layout. I am not sure how to open the loco up and check inside. Would like step by step directions for that, if you know how to do this. The pickup looks good and not worn. Not sure what is wrong, could be a disconnected wire inside. As for the tender, could be anything. The wires look original, should I replace them with new wires? Could be the relay. Any idea how to open up the tender?? Thanks and hope you can help.
