I live in an older residential area and the road in front of my house is 24' wide. Actually, this is too narrow for curbside parking. Nevertheless, I use 6 " for a curb to curb measurement which looks good with the 1/43 vehicles.
most cars are 1/43, it looks better if the road width is increased from scale IMO .

I also use roughly 3 1/2" for my road width. I used a piece of 1 x 4 and traced where the roads were going to go, so the roads might be a bit wider, but likely less than 4" Here's a picture of what they look like with lots of vehicles on them:

On my Plasticville layout with Plasticville cars: 3 1/2" Of course, Plasticville is not really an exact scale! I would suggest that, unless you are a "scale" person, you place your vehicles on the layout and get a "visual". If it looks good to you then it's right.
